Cosmopolitan Identities
Differences between people are important in surviving. Today's politics tend to showcase that anyone is different is an enemy of the state. Australia is widely influenced by American culture, our current political standard is often trying to relate itself to Americanism, where our political leaders want many American policies in effect, as well as many of the white nationalists who have come up to rise due to the rise in American politics.
People are different. And we all view people differently, it's in human nature. Regarding politics, the idea of someone from another culture often relies on the alien and often relies on the idea that because they're not from the same religious, cultural or national group as us, then they must be weird, stupid or something worst (this usually refers to the realm of discriminatory slurs). The main man of the world, Donald Trump, spoke about the 2017 Charlottesville riots and mentioned that there were "some very fine people on both sides." This not only talks about people on the left (from moderate, central to the far left of that like ANTIFA, or anti-fascists), but also people who were there that are more aligned with conservative views (specifically Nazis, because let's be real people, they were screaming some very anti-semitic and pro-white nationalism shit).
Politics in today's world has changed drastically if you would've asked me five years ago who the current prime minister was I'd ask you what happened to the other guys, or who the U.S. President is I'll tell you that you're joking! Politics is ugly, and especially today's politics can make or break a person's opinion of you. You can view a person as good or evil depending on who they voted for in the last election, or even how they contain themselves. As different people have different opinions.
My mum's second husband is someone who, even though we had vastly different political opinions, we still would talk to each other about things that don't regard politics at all (of course in the last 3 weeks of us living together he didn't speak to me, but that's another moment for another time), you can still communicate with someone who is different to you, based on geography, politically, sexuality, everything and anything.
I had two friends from high school (not friends anymore thus everything will be in the past tense) who didn't have the same political views, they both believed that immigrants should be in their own country, that "boat people" shouldn't come to Australia and they both didn't like the labour party. The two were together so it kind of fueled their belief system, and one of the friends has a twin brother who held the same beliefs until he moved in with a mutual friend who is quite pro-everything. I'm not friends with the two, not because of our political beliefs, but because the woman out of the two didn't like me having other friends (when I went to TAFE after high school I had made other friends as well as friends from a Facebook group), and having a sexual relationship with my partner, etc. With my mother's second husband, he was just an arsehole, and I believe it's politics that helped that spew inside of him. There was a lot more though, but it's not my place to talk about the relationship and what not.
People are different, and I think we all have to accept that, sure there might be some differences we all don't agree with. I believe pineapple should go on pizza, whereas my partner hates it with a passion. Do I believe he should jump off a cliff for those views? No. Do I believe he's wrong? Yes. But I still love him regardless of how dumb his view is.
Okay, I realise that sentence might cheapen this whole piece. People should look at differences and accept them, not look at them and instantly dismiss the difference. Because if we were all the same, it certainly would be boring no? It's like that episode of The Fairly Oddparents (2001 - 2017) (rest in peace Butch Hartman's career) The Same Game (2001) where Timmy wishes everyone was the same, and they're just all grey blobs, and that's kinda boring isn't it? Sure it would work out that everyone doesn't have any key instincts that they look different, but it sure offers a perspective of boring-ness. Though that's just me, referincing some early 00's animation.
